Amira Ziyan, Hiding in the Light: A Synergy of Contrasts as a Visual Code of “Otherness”

This article presents an interpretation of the works by Israeli–Druze photographer Amira Ziyan, focusing on a series photographs from 2017. These portray reenactments actions identified with traditional roles women in Druze society, such as cooking and cleaning. Employing unique visual language choice form content, artist depicts confrontation between clear set rigid boundaries values contemporary, post-modern reality which these are blurred. The interpretive reading proposed here describes synergy codes minorities accepted their surrounding pervasive culture contemporary Israel. Ziyan’s work offers glimpse into “otherness” that express inner world who grew up margins society but strove to be essential part its main artistic current. Focusing this perspective contributes ongoing discourse regarding contradictions inherent Israeli identity.
